Flagstone Patios and Walkways

Natural flagstone patios, paths and stepping stones set in mortar or dry-laid, with careful grading so water drains away.

Flagstone is flat, natural stone cut into slabs, and it makes some of the most beautiful patios and paths you can build. The irregular shapes and soft color variations feel organic and warm, and they sit well beside brick houses and gardens. A flagstone patio looks as comfortable with a table and string lights as it does with a few simple chairs.

There are two ways to lay it. Mortared flagstone sits on a concrete base and gives a firm, formal surface. Dry-laid flagstone sits on compacted stone dust or sand, with gaps filled by sand or plants, and gives a more relaxed look with excellent drainage. We help you choose and then build it to be level, safe and well drained.

Mortared or dry-laid

Mortared flagstone is firm for furniture and tends to need less upkeep. Dry-laid is easier to repair and drains naturally. Each has a place.

Base preparation

The base decides how long a patio stays flat. We excavate, compact stone and set the grade so water runs away from the house.

Cutting and fitting

Each stone is cut and fitted so gaps stay even and the pattern reads naturally. Edges are kept tight and trip hazards are avoided.

Edges, steps and borders

Borders, steps and edging stones give the patio a clean outline and hold everything in place.

Questions

Flagstone Patios and Walks FAQ

Is flagstone slippery when wet?

Many types have a natural texture that grips well. We help you choose a safe surface.

Does flagstone need sealing?

Optional. Sealing deepens color and can make cleaning easier.

How is it different from pavers?

Flagstone is natural and irregular. Pavers are uniform and often faster to install.

Can I walk on a new patio right away?

Dry-laid is ready quickly. Mortared work needs time to cure.

Will weeds grow between stones?

In dry-laid joints they can. Polymeric sand or mortar helps reduce them.
