Stone Work

Natural Stone Masonry

Walls, columns, hearths and feature surfaces built from real fieldstone, limestone and other natural stone, cut and fitted by hand.

Natural stone has a depth that nothing manufactured quite matches. No two pieces are alike, the colors shift with the light and the surface carries marks of the earth it came from. Middle Tennessee is limestone country, and local stone suits the region in color and character.

Working with natural stone is slow, careful work. Each piece is sorted, turned, cut and fitted so that joints are tight and the pattern looks natural. We build with full-depth stone for walls and use thinner stone as a veneer over a sound backing for houses and fireplaces. Either way, the goal is the same: a result that looks timeless. Stone also holds its value. Where other materials fade or wear, quality stone tends to look better with age, so a stone wall, hearth or entry is an investment that rewards you every year you own the home.

Choosing the stone

Limestone, sandstone, fieldstone and river rock each have a look and a behavior. We help you choose stone for color, texture and how it will weather.

Sorting and fitting

Stone is laid out and sorted before it goes into the wall, mixing sizes and colors so no patch looks too heavy or too light.

Mortar and joint style

Tight, raked or dry-stack joints change the whole look of a stone wall. We show you examples so you can choose the style you prefer.

Structure and drainage

Stone walls are heavy. They need footings, drainage and sometimes steel. We build the structure that lets the beauty last.

Questions

Natural Stone Masonry FAQ

Limestone and fieldstone are popular, and we help you choose for your house and yard.

Will stone stain?

Some stones can mark. We tell you which are more forgiving and when to seal.

Can natural stone go on an existing wall?

Often, with proper backing and ties. We inspect the wall first.

Does stone need maintenance?

Very little. An occasional rinse and a look at the joints is usually enough.
