Retaining Wall Repair

Leaning, bulging and cracked retaining walls assessed and repaired or rebuilt with proper drainage and reinforcement.

A retaining wall that leans, bulges or cracks is telling you something. Soil is pushing harder than the wall can resist, usually because water has collected behind it. The longer the movement continues, the more the wall shifts, and the more expensive the repair becomes.

We assess the wall to find out why it is moving. Sometimes a section can be taken down and rebuilt with drainage and new base. Sometimes the whole wall needs replacing. Where a small repair is enough, we do only that. Either way, we correct the cause so the new wall does not repeat the problem. In Middle Tennessee, heavy spring rains and clay soils put real pressure on walls, so we pay close attention to how water arrives at the wall, where it goes and whether the repair leaves it a clear path away.

Reading the signs

Leaning, bulges, stair-step cracks, open joints and wet spots at the base are signs of pressure or poor drainage.

Fixing drainage first

We open the area behind the wall, add gravel and drain pipe and redirect surface water that is working its way down the slope.

Rebuild sections or the whole wall

When courses have shifted, we number and set aside the stones, rebuild the base and reset them with reinforcement.

Preventing a repeat

Good grading, downspout extensions and proper caps keep water away from the wall in the future.
