Careful restoration of older brick and stone, using soft lime mortars and period techniques to preserve character and stop damage.
Nashville has beautiful older buildings, from brick bungalows and Victorian homes to stone churches and storefronts. Their masonry was built with soft, lime-rich mortar and handmade brick. Repairing it with modern, hard cement mortar can do more harm than good, because the harder mortar traps moisture and cracks the softer brick.
Our restoration work respects how old walls were built. We study the existing mortar, match its color, texture and hardness and repair only what needs repairing. We clean gently, never sandblast, and replace brick with salvaged or carefully matched units. The goal is a wall that looks like it has always been there and keeps standing for another century.
We look at mortar color, joint profile, brick type and bonding pattern so the repair matches the way the building was originally made.
Old brick needs mortar that is softer than the brick itself so moisture can leave through the joints. We mix lime-based mortars that suit your wall.
Harsh blasting removes the hard fired skin of brick and invites damage. We use low-pressure and gentle methods instead.
Where bricks have failed, we use salvaged units or match size, color and texture closely so the repair is nearly invisible.
