Rusted steel lintels, sagging arches and cracked brick over windows and doors repaired so the opening is supported again.
Every window and door in a brick wall needs something to carry the brick above it. In older homes that may be a brick arch. In many others, it is a steel angle called a lintel. When steel rusts, it swells and pushes the brick apart, causing stair-step cracks at the corners of the opening. Left alone, the brick above can sag.
We repair these openings by supporting the wall temporarily, removing the affected brick, treating or replacing the lintel and rebuilding the courses above with matched brick and new flashing. For arches, we reset or rebuild the arch brick so that it carries load as it should and keeps the shape of the opening. This is repair that rewards experience. Temporary supports, careful removal and exact rebuilding all take practice, and doing them right is what keeps the opening, the window and the wall above it safe for the long run.
Cracks stepping outward from the corners of a window, sagging brick above an opening and rust stains are common signs.
Before taking out brick, we brace the wall so it remains stable throughout the repair. Safety comes first.
Rusted lintels are replaced with galvanized or coated steel, with flashing and weep holes to keep new rust away.
Arches work by compression. We carefully reset arch brick so each unit is tight and the curve is true.
