Old mortar ground out and replaced with fresh, color-matched mortar so water stays out and the wall looks crisp again.
The mortar between your bricks is the part of the wall that was meant to wear out first. It takes the weather so the bricks do not have to. After decades of rain, sun and freezing nights, joints crack, recess and crumble, and water starts to slip behind the face. Tuckpointing replaces that mortar before the damage spreads into the bricks.
We grind out the old joints to a clean, even depth, blow out the dust, dampen the brick and pack in new mortar in thin layers. Then we tool each joint to the original profile. Done properly, the wall looks freshly laid and sheds water the way it should for many years to come.
We cut the joints to a consistent depth without chipping the brick edges. Shallow cuts leave weak mortar behind, and deep cuts can harm the wall, so depth control matters.
Mortar that is harder than the brick pushes stress into the brick faces. We test samples for color and use a mix that is softer than the unit it surrounds.
Mortar goes in thin lifts so it bonds fully and does not shrink away from the sides of the joint. Rushing this step is the usual reason repairs fail.
Concave, flush or struck joints each have a look and a purpose. We copy the original profile so the wall keeps its character.

Many walls go several decades. Exposed, sunny or wet walls may need it sooner, so a quick look every few years helps.
Grinding makes dust. We use shrouded tools and vacuums, and we protect plants and openings.
The terms are used loosely. Both mean replacing old mortar joints with new ones.
