Custom mortar mixes matched to your existing wall in color, texture and strength so repairs disappear into the brick.
The difference between a repair you notice and one you do not is often the mortar. Even a perfect brick can look wrong in a joint that is too white, too gray or too coarse. Matching mortar is part science and part art, and it is one of the skills that sets good masons apart.
We study your existing joints in daylight, look at the sand, the cement and any lime in the mix and then make test batches. We let the samples cure, because mortar changes color as it dries, and compare them against the wall. When the test patch looks right, we mix the full batch and repair the wall with a color that fits. On an older Nashville home, a patch that is a shade too light can draw the eye from the street. Taking time to match the color and the texture is what keeps your repair quiet and your home looking original.
The sand color, the grain size and the binder all affect the look. We examine broken pieces to understand the original recipe.
Mortar looks different wet and dry. We make small test patches, let them cure and compare them in natural light.
The new mortar must be softer than the brick it supports. A good match is correct in color and in performance.
Replacement brick can be blended with older units, and stain or cleaning techniques can help new brick fit in.
